Scripture is not a random collection of unrelated topics or directives, it is one unified story: God’s story of redemption through Jesus. Therefore, the practice of reading, studying, and being immersed in the Bible is imperative to fully surrendering our hearts to Jesus. We will read a chapter each day beginning in Genesis and moving through the Bible to Revelation.
The BREAD acronym (Be Still, Read, Examine, Apply, Devote to Prayer) is a tool we’ll be using, designed to help us slow down and prayerfully read the Bible instead of racing through the text each day. BREAD journaling can help guide our time with God as we seek to grow as fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ.
Be Still
Find a place where you can remove distractions and practice being still and silent. Then ask God to be with you and speak to you. Pray that the Holy Spirit will guide your time and draw you near to Jesus.
Read
Read through the passage for the day. Then read through it again slowly. Write down what you observe and any questions you might have. What stands out? What is repeated? What is compared or con- trasted? What words are unfamiliar?
Examine
Examine the text and then let the text examine you. What is the con- text of this passage and how does it relate to the story of Scripture? Use a study Bible or commentary to dig deeper into what this author intended to communicate. Seek to discover what God is revealing and how it speaks to your heart and mind. Write your reflections.
Apply
Write down one thing you believe God is asking you to do in re- sponse. Is there a sin to avoid, a promise to trust, an example to follow, a command to obey, or knowledge about God and his plan that changes, challenges, or comforts you? How will you apply this passage to your life today?
Devote to Prayer
Finally, close by writing a simple prayer of devotion to God, praising him for who he is and thanking him for what he has done for you. Ask that, through the power of the Holy Spirit, his truth would bear fruit in your life as you trust in and follow Jesus.

From the beginning, God established the pattern for life in his kingdom: his people, in his place, enjoying peace and rest with unrestricted access to his presence. As mankind opted for self-rule, sin entered the cosmos and disrupted the harmony of kingdom life. Yet God, compelled by his own grace and love, determined to restore his kingdom. He called Abraham and his descendants to re-establish the kingdom pattern, promising to lead them by his presence to a new place where they, as his people, could lead the nations to himself.

APRIL–JUNE
The promises God made to Abraham began to take shape yet remained incomplete. The family of Abraham grew to become the nation of Israel. After being led out of Egyptian captivity and into Canaan, their promised land, they agreed to keep their covenant with God and allegiance to God alone. God brought his people to his place and made a way for them to once again be in his presence with the construction of the Tabernacle and Temple. But the problem of sin remained. The people continually turn away from God and as they do, their disobedience again disrupted the Kingdom life offered to them.

OCTOBER–DECEMBER
Before returning to his Father in heaven, Jesus gave his people a promise and a mission: He would send his Spirit as their helper as they expand his Kingdom by making disciples of all nations. This “Church Age” is where we find ourselves today. We are “Already” made right before God and enjoy the promised Holy Spirit who dwells within us and equips us to complete our mission, but we wait for the complete restoration of the Kingdom which has “Not Yet” fully come. With his return will come the completely perfected Kingdom: God’s people (all who believe in him) in God’s place (the New Creation) enjoying peace and rest with unrestricted access to his presence.
